Control tips flickering

204 128KB
I have a form with several dozen controls, and just five of them have control tips. When I hover the mouse over three of these - the ones which allow data entry (one combo box, two text fields) the control tip (presumably) appears briefly about once a second and immediately disappears again. The control tips on the labels behave normally.

It makes no difference whether the control has the focus before I hover on it. Also, I have ensured the controls are in front on the Arrange tab, and I don't use OnMouseMove events. (These were derived from suggestions about flickering I saw on other forums when googling the problem).

Can't see anything funny in the control properties. Any ideas what I should look for?

I have no answer for you I'm afraid Petrol.

However, in case others do, it seems likely to be a version issue - in as much as it's Access which controls how such things are displayed rather than your code - so adding your O/S and Office/Access versions may prove helpful.

Petrol,

Oddly enough, I have encountered some similar issues with Control Tips. I have a very complicated form with about 50 controls with Control Tips associated with them. This form worked perfectly for years; then it stopped working. After scratching my head for many hours, I did the following:
  1. Create a new, blank form
  2. Go to the troublesome form; Ctrl-A to select all the controls
  3. Go to the new form; Ctrl-C to paste all the controls into the new form
  4. Copy and paste any VBA
Violas, violins and vinaigrette! Everything started working again.

I don't know what to tell you. Sometimes Access just does really weird stuff!

Hope this hepps!

Interesting! Thanks, twinnyfo, I'll try that tomorrow. (It's getting late around this part of the world!)

I guess that puts you in the Far East Petrol.

Even my friends in Seattle (West Coast of USA) would have been into the early hours by then.

I should have added :
That technique of Copying & Pasting can be a godsend. Today I had an Event that wasn't triggering the code so I Cut & Pasted just the code. When code is Pasted in that includes correctly formatted Event Procedures for any Events associated with the Form that exist, Access will automatically set the Event properties to link to that code.

It doesn't handle other corruptions but is often worth a try as it's very quick and safe to do.

Greetings from Brisbane, everybody.

NeoPa: I guess that puts you in or around the UK :)

Well lamentably, copying and pasting neither just the code, nor the entire set of controls to a new form, helped in this instance, but thanks for the suggestions anyway ... they're worth keeping in mind for other occasions.

Meanwhile, as a stopgap measure I have just copied the control tips to the associated labels, in the hope that users if really desperate may find them there :-)

Hi Petrol.

I'm under no illusion but that Oz is a big place, but I suspect Brisbane puts you well within the area affected by the fires over there. You must know you have sympathy flooding to you all from around the whole world.

UK. Yes - South London.

Sorry the tips didn't work for you BTW.

Thank you both for your good wishes and your prayers. We are seeing the answer to some of the latter in recent rains over much of Queensland (where I am), and some of the fires down south have abated somewhat, but about 60 are still burning and there's a long road to recovery ahead. We've lost 30 people, 2000+ homes and over a billion of our native birds and animals. But the expressions of sympathy and many offers of practical help from around the world have been encouraging.

Forgive me for entering totally off topic material into this technical site. I've received much help through it in recent years.

That puts things in an extremely different perspective. For such a unique ecosystem as you have there, this is truly tragic.

I don't think the mods are going to care too much about going off topic on this one--since two of them are talking to you right now....

:-)
