Autonumbering based on a criteria

P: 1
I'm building my first Access database and ran into a problem with auto numbering based on a criteria. I want a field that will autonumber in sequential order only if another field (yes/No) box is checked. If the box is not checked, I don't want it to assign a number, but need the next sequential number if it is checked. Any help appreciated.

Welcome to Bytes, MelWil! We need a bit more info to help you with a good solution. How is your database set up? When will the autonumber happen? Is this an existing table of data and the autonumbering based on criteria only needs to happen once? Does it need to be done as new records are created? Can the flag (checkbox) be changed at a later time and, if so, will you need to renumber all the records based on this change?

Help us understand not only how you see this happening, but what your actual need is so we can guide you toward the best solution.

It seems you want the numbering to be assigned automatically - and yet you can't afford the assignment to be automatic.

I suspect a little consideration of what you actually want is in order before you get to the stage where you start to post your question.

I suspect there are answers to your requirements, but ONLY when we know what they are. Of course that's impossible (except by lucky guess) until YOU know what they are.

It's too late to do things properly now, but you could catch up if you felt inclined and put this thread back on course with a little preparation.
