Multiple uses in Access Database problem

Hello,

I'm a bit of a newby here, but i have a small problem and i hope someone can help me.

We have a small access database to record sales for small fairs. We used to hook up 3 laptops to a private network and use the public folder in one of the laptops to open and read/write the database.

1 laptop is running Vista, 1 is running windows 8, and one is running windows 7. All of them have Access 2010 installed.

Now each time when we try to open the database, 2 can open the same database, but the third can't open it. No error message, it's just not opening. We tried to switch the ones who opened it first, but that doesn't matter. The third to open can't get in.

I hope i specified my problem enough. Sorry for my english... :)

Tom,

Welcome to Bytes!

Please clarify: You have Computer A, Computer B and Computer C. After Computer A and Computer B open the DB, Computer C cannot open it. Now, if Computer C opens it first, and Computer A opens it next, then Computer B cannot open it. Is this a correct understanding of the problem?

Either way, this is strange.

Do you have your DB split into a Front End (which holds all the forms, reports, queries and code) and a Back End (which houses only the data)? This may alleviate your problem, and there are many methods of doing this effectively. There are also many very complex ways to achieve this, but very effective if you have some more advanced VBA skills.

You state you are a newby here (to Bytes), but are you a newby to VBA? Your current skill level will dictate how complex we want to get with this.

Hello Twinnyfo,

Thank you for your quick reaction.

To answer your questions:
Yes. You understand the problem. I've tried to open the database with in the order
A, B, C
A, C, B
B, A, C enz. Always the third computer won't open it.

The database is not split in a frontend and backend. Both the forms, reports, tables and code are in 1 database. Is that going to fix my problem?

I not a noob at VBA, but also not an expert. I'm trying hard to learn everything, but the only way to learn it is by doing it.

Are you familiar with how to split a DB into Front and Back Ends? A more involved method is here: Working with Front and Back Ends, but if we get the basics down first, let's just see if splitting the DB will work.

As a reminder, before you do anything, Back up, back up, back up!

This might be a simple fix--or it might be an Access quirk that we are dealing with.

I've not done this before. But your link of 'working with Front and Back Ends' is specific enough! I'll give it a try. Thanks for the help!
