Error 3021- No current record - When trying to backup database.

Psylence
Good afternoon everyone ~

Let me first begin by saying I am not a programmer in any way. I took over a position that included data entry on Access 2007 running on Windows XP but the original database was created by someone no longer working here and no one else here knows how to use it.

I enter information concerning students and class attendance/grades. Up until about a week ago, I had no issues with it at all saving and backing up. I went to backup the database last week and it started giving me an 'Error 3021 - no current record' message. I read the help file and have poured over Access forums to try and resolve the situation but as I said, I am completely an end user and all the programmer speak was WAY over my head...lol.

I have no idea where to even begin to look for an empty recordset or where the EOF and BOF would be located.

If anyone could please advise, it would be very appreciated. Many thanks in advance!

How are you backing up the database?
Jun 28 '13 #2
Hiyas Seth ~

I am just using the in program backup - Office Button > Manage > Back Up Database.

Hmmm... That removes all the ideas that I had. The only thing that I can think of is to make sure that all objects (forms, tables, queries, etc.) are closed when you try to back it up and make sure that no one else is in it at the time.

Seth more than likely has the solution here. There is a form or query open that is sitting on a new record or has unsaved data that an event is trying to handle - it's the only consistaint reason I know of for a 3021 error and the built-in backup doesn't handle this gracefully.

When using the built-in back up it best practice to close all of the open Access objects (forms, reports, etc...) and to double check that there's no-one else in the database.

You can also us the OS to do a simple file copy. This is fairly easy to do.

I made sure everything was closed and I am the only person in it and am still receiving the same error...grrrr :(

This is a huge problem if I am unable to back this up. Are there any other backup methods you might suggest?

In response to zmbd ~

My apologies, I had not refreshed to see your comment before posting the above. I have closed the windows within Access but how do I make sure there are no forms or queries open, as well?

Gah, I detest feeling like a noob....lol. Graphics programs I can navigate but this...blech.

Thank you both kindly for the responses. Still no luck but I shall continue trying.

Have a great weekend. :)

if there are no windows open within the main access gui other than the access object navigation pane then everything should be shut down. Sounds like we may have the start of a file corruption.
Exit out of the database.
Use the Operating system to make a copy of the files as I suggested.
Now reopen the database
Goto database tools tab on the ribbon
Select compact and repair
Close and reopen
Now try the built-in backup.
Your only other option will be to use the OS to make a copy of the database file, naming it as needed to keep track of the backups.

Happy Monday, Z...hope that you had a good weekend!

Well, everything I had tried didn't work but I was able to make a replica of the database and then backup from that. Is there any way to make the replica my working database now since it doesn't encounter the same error message as the original?

Rename the files at the OS level.
The fact that the copy works and the original doesn't supports my last post with the corruption. Did you try what I suggested in #9?
Jul 1 '13 #11
I did all the you suggested in #9 and do now have all the information saved now (whew!). But here is the very odd thing....after all that, before I closed out of the DB this afternoon, just for the heck of it, I tried to save a backup the original way (through the program > manage > back up database) and it worked fine...no error message!!! Not that I am going to complain...but seriously....argh. hehe

So, at least now I have multiple back ups of it and hopefully shall not run into this encounter again. If I do, at least I now know what else to try.

Thank you kindly for your patience and guidance...it has been much appreciated!

Ahhhh... we finally fed the Grimlins!
They don't like Backups any more than most kids like green vegies!
:)
Good luck with your new position!

Thank you! :)

And just for good measure.... /goes out and buys some duct tape, a hammer and a bag of spinach...just in case!

Flood-lights, don't forget the very bright flood-lights, and NO water!

LOL...how could I forget those?! And nothing after midnight...check!

I think I may have to break that out and watch it again tonight after I get home...if this day ever ends!
