Using FIND command in Access form using linked (SQLServer) table

I'm trying to use the FIND command to search for a specific value in whatever field I focus on. I'm using MS Access 2007. The table the form is using is linked to SQLServer someplace on the network. When using FIND on Access-based tables, I have no problem. However, when I use the FIND command on a linked table, it sometimes finds the mark, and sometimes goes on forever (requiring me to stop the search). If I index the table in SQLServer 2008 R2 for the attributes i'm pre-defining, will that eliminate the problem or is there something else creating the delay? Mind you, if I let it go, it usually comes back CANNOT FIND value when I know it's there.

Relating a tad of hear-say from people that work with some really huge SQLServer and Oracle databases when using Access as the front-end. What they've mentioned is that when the recordset is fairly large, the FIND can sometimes stall over the ODBC connection(s). The only solution they have is to filter the records down and then use the FIND.
This is echoed by Microsoft http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr.../ff194787.aspx.
