how do I convert negative values to positive on a result? I am currently using =sum([customertype])="residential") and I changed it to =sum(-[customertype])="residential") and it's doing the same thing - rendering a negative sum.

You can use the ABS() function to get the absolute value of the number.

That's most likely the answer you need, but if you're specifically negating, as opposed to producing a positive result of the same size, then use instead :
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. =-Sum(blah blah blah)
