MSAccess Freezes and suddenly unfreezes.. not sure why

106 100+
Hi,

I have an Ms Access 2003 application that decides to freeze itself and the whole PC such that we can click on any ms access control or a windows icon but nothing will happen. but behind the scene, all the clicks are being recorded. Then, all of a sudden, the PC will come to life and all the clicks will be implemented, opening up many windows / dialog windows.

This will also happen on the coding screen.

other than this application functions well.

this will happen on any PC any specification, max paging file etc.

i am not sure why this is happening but it is annoying.

Your suggestions appreciated.

Can you elaborate as to the circumstances under which it happens? Maybe there's a pattern to this behavior that can help you figure out the reason. Does it always occur after a particular action is taken in the application? For example, this behavior or something similar to it, can occur when a performance-intensive query is executing.

I expect it's hard for you to identify anything in your database that might be relevant to this question in order to give us some information to work with, but I'm equally sure you must appreciate that without any information at all we are not in a position to diagnose this for you. The best I can do in the circumstances, is to suggest a way that you can identify which part(s) of your database are causing this unfortunate behaviour.

I suggest that you take a copy of your database and remove more and more of it until the problem disappears. If, at this stage, you are still unable to determine why it's behaving as it is, then that would be a good time to post again with the information and we could look at it for you.

I have a similar problem with my one application that works on Windows 7 sp1 and Access 2007 sp2. If i leave it for more than a few minutes and start to work again, it freezes for a short while when i click inside it, and then unfreezes shortly after that. I get the feeling its updating through the network.
What version of Access and Windows do you use?

Hy all !
Other possible cause can be your antivirus and it's settings.
Try to stop the antivirus. (Of course disconnect your computer from the internet before that.).
Tell us if the problem is or is not solved.

Good luck !

I had the same problem. Running Access 2003 on WinXP sp3, I installed an update to my CA Security Center around 10/12 and for the last few days Access, and only Access, would intermittently freeze for a few seconds on some weird schedule (never timed it) while I was typing or clicking a button or whatever. I ready Mihail's post on this site about stopping the antivirus and so I "snoozed" CA SC and Access wouldn't freeze. I unsnoozed CA SC and the second I did, I couldn't get Access to wake up for a few seconds. For a few minutes, I worked in Access with it freezing up (especially when making it the current window while typing this), then I snoozed CA SC and found it went away immediately.

Also, the events are handled differently in .accdb and .mdb environment. So .mdb files being run in the Access 2007 environment will appear to freeze at times, though it is actually just running and event and halting the screen update events. Key strokes are still recognized and are pending.

I've had success adding the 'DoEvents' command in the Subs that are causing the 'freeze'
