How to assign work to multiple users?

I need to create a form that allows the user to enter the number of records they would like to work on and then assign those records to them. For example, have a form with open text box asking to enter the number of records to be assigned? The user enters any number (say 50) and the first 50 records in the queue are assigned to their current user ID. I will have up to 4 users at a time pulling their work. HELP!

What have you tried?

What if 2 of the 4 workers try to grab 50 jobs at the same time? and they each finish up grabbing some of the same jobs?
You need to take that into consideration
Or is that what you are asking for help on?

First help yourself Deb. Add some detail to the question explaining the sort of data you're working with; any table layouts you use; names of the items you're working with; etc. The absence of this basic data simply delays and hinders any help getting to you.
