how to visualize records higher than 999 in progressive order in Tables

I am working on a database where records have been created starting from 001, now I am moving from record 999 to 1000, but while in "Forms" I can visualize them in the progressive order, in "Tables" the record #1000 goes after 100, the record 1010 goes after 101, and so on.
I can understand the rational of the Autonumber in doing so, but is there anyway I can have the 1000s progressively visualized after 999?

Many Thanks!!!

You say autonumber but is it autonumber or text datatype. If it is autonumber this not natural behaviour if it is text datatype then columns will sort as text ie: not numerically.

Either way Christine you normally should not really have need to work directly in the table itself. Tables are really only data buckets to store the data and provide for indexing and other defaults. Create queries and work with those then you can sort anyway you wish

@Jim Doherty
It is autonumber.
In fact I am confused by the Forms and Lines all sorted numerically in the correct order, and the Tables not.
Is there a way I can write the records number from 1,000 on so that they show up in the correct order after 999?
I do work sometimes on the Table itself...
Many thanks!

Is this autonumber field indexed? like I say if it is numeric autonumber particularly if it is indexed it should sort numerically unless you have some other field set as your primary key in which case the table sorts by that field instead when the table itself is viewed in datasheet. That is why I suggested you work in queries rather than the table itself because using quiries you can define the sort order irrespective of any primary key taking primacy on sorting

It is indexed indeed, and it is set as primary key, and linked to 8 other tables in relationships. I have not built the database myself, but I do need to modify records and queries often to adapt to sudden changes (it's a database of humanitarian aid dispatches), and it helped me to see records in Tables sort out in progressive numbers. But I got your point, many thanks for your help (I'm a beginner with Access)!

I take it you have sorted this out then? Like I say most work in access is and should be done through queries, that way you can select the columns you need, define the sort order you require linking the various tables together overall in the a manner commensurate with the relevant datasets you wish to make visually.

@Jim Doherty
I think I'll give up having the records sorted in numerical progressive order. I will use the Tables to modify data. Thank you for advising.

  1. I am working on a database where records have been created starting from 001
This is an AutoNumber field starting at 1, but displays as '001'. I would guess that the table is formatting this number when displayed in Data Sheet View.
Just a guess, but try changing the format to include 4 digit numbers.

ok. So I should change record '1' with 0001, etc.
Will try and let you know, thanks for suggestion!
