Cannot compact on server using Access 2003

P: n/a
I have a number of Access 2000 format databases on a Windows 2003
server. For some reason I can no longer compact these databases
directly on the server using Access 2003. Access 2000 seems to
compact them just fine however. If I copy the database to my local
workstation Access 2003 will compact it just fine. On the server
however, when I use Access 2003, it creates a compacted copy of the
original database and names it dbn.mdb (where n is a sequential
number). However, it fails to replace the original copy of the
database with the compacted copy. There is no error message. The
problem also occurs with Access 2003 formatted databases (although of
course I cannot compact these using Access 2000). I am using SP3 on
Access 2003 and I suspect that SP3 may actually be the problem. Has
anyone else run across this?

I have the same problem with compacting databases directly on the
server using Access 2003. I also have Access SP 3 installed, but I'm
on Windows XP Professional, version 2002, SP 2.

Interesting. We managed to work around it by twiddling the
permissions on the server. One of our server support people found
this link to a similar issue with Access 2007 but the permissions
tweak in the 'open discussion' described in it fixed our problem:
