Filter by form

I'm very new with Access, so this is probably a very basic question. I'm using Access 2007.

I have a single table with multiple entries that I am displaying in a form. I want to be able to seach the data using multiple criteria and display the results in the same format that the original records are display. I was going to use queries, but found this very confusing.

So what I ended up doing was a Filter by Form command. This seems to work ok, but when I attempted to add command buttons I ran into some problems. The Filter by Form button works ok, but when I go to click on the apply filter button I find that it is greyed out.

Any ideas? Would a query be better for this?

Thanks.

Daisy,
You did not post your code, so I am guessing that the ApplyFilter button is greyed out because the filter is already applied when the form is activated. If that is the case, then you need a RemoveFilter button to clear the filter. When the RemoveFilter button is clicked, your ApplyFilter button will become enabled.

To be honest I wouldn't know what I'm looking at with code. I am very new.

I can do what I want to do by using functions in the ribbon. First by selecting the filter by form function, selecting the things I want to filter and then going back to the ribbon and hitting the apply filter. This works fine, but i just wanted to have some buttons to conduct this rather than going to the ribbon.

I've created a command button that does the first step fine. It is the last step, the apply filter that I can't get a button to work. what I end up having to do is go back to the ribbon and apply that way.

I have managed to create buttons to see all the entries after filtering, and have a button to clear all filters.

The moment I click filter by form (to select what criteria I want to filter by) is the moment all the buttons become greyed out.

I hope that makes sense.

Ok,
AFAIK, the filterbyform is not a form, but a control in a similar sense as a subform, That being the case, when it is disabled, all buttons that are on it are also disabled. The solution is to have the buttons on a separate popup form, or on the toolbar. See the link below for a coded toolbar solution:
