How would you do a checkbook register?

I know I can keep a running total, but I was thinking that this would
be very slow after a while and not very efficient. For example, if it
calculates everything for three years, that's a lot of number
crunching. I know I could narrow it by month or something, but other
than that it'd be intense the larger the db got.

I thought about a table with a starting balance and from there do my
debit and credit, updating the starting balance column each time and
grabbing that value when I need to know the balance. Other than that
I know of nothing but a running total simply adding and subtracting as
needed. Thanks for thoughts.

JET/ACE SQL is very quick at summing. Unless there are many, many
cheques a day, calculations for three years will seem to be
instantaneous.

You say, "I know I can keep a running total"; Where? How? Running
Totals and Counters are not dealt with happily and easily by JET/ACE,
and by Access, only in Reports. Maybe there is something new in Access
2007 I haven't noticed?

I only meant I know it's possible. I've seen threads where it was
mentioned.
