I would suspect that the strings actually in the fields are padded with
spaces.
To check test the length of the data not the field. something like
intDataSize = Len(FirstName)
and then
intDataSize2 = Len(Trim((FirstName))
If they are not the same as each other and the len is longer than the count
of
visible characters, they are padded.
You can remove that with an update query where fieldName is updated to
Trim(fieldName)
