Access form inserts before data entry?

In Access 2003 my form updates a SQL server 2005 backend. The problem: on modification of data the cursor blinks (arrow to hourglass) and the Calculating... message flashes at the bottom ot the form continuously. This continues until the form is closed. The record is updated. When adding a new record with the attached sub-form I get SQL key constraint error messages before I can select a value from the appropriate combo box. Identity column is set to increment from 1 by 1 but the key value skips; example: record one key value = 1, next record key value = 12 instead of 2. Seems to be a loop, but how? Thanks.

I would use a workaround, being the insert of an initial record for the parent form. (Will require a delete when the user cancels the form!)
Thus the subform records probably cause no trouble. Looks like they aren't "aware" of the primary key of the parent form...
