highest date in a given table?
I do not know where to start.

Hi. Skeleton SQL below - change table and field names to your own as appropriate.
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. SELECT
  2. MIN([your table name].[your date field name]) AS LeastDate, 
  3. MAX([your table name].[your date field name]) AS HighestDate 
  4. FROM [your table name];
