Access 97 on a Vista machine

69
I cannot get Access 97 to run on a Vista machine. I know about the fix for out of memory, but I can't get SR1 to load, which means I can't load SR2, which should fix the out of memory error. Anyone know how to deal with this?

Not many here will know too much about installing the product. Most of what we deal with pertains to using it.

Personally I haven't used either Vista or Access 2007, as all the indications were that I would experience little but problems with either of them.

Having said that, you don't say why you have difficulties applying SR1. It's a little hard to know how to deal with a problem knowing next to nothing about what the problem is.

Perhaps if you give some details there may be somebody who can help you.

Vista doesn't get along well with any version of Access, and I'm guessing it probably gets along worse with 97 than any other. When you say you can't get Access 97 to run do you mean that you can't open Access or you can't run an app? The only thing I remember reading on 97 running under Vista (and the only thing I could find after an hour's search) was something by Tony Toews stating that you have to let it "Run as Administrator" by selecting the "Advanced" option on the properties of the
application icon. Sorry we can't be of more help, but Access97 is, after all, a decade old.

Sorry, guys, I should have been more specific.

The problem arises because I have one client that is still in an Access 97 environment. My laptop packed up the other day and I decided to bite the Vista bullet. With XP, if you install Access 97 off the CD, when you try to start Access, you get a message saying "Out of Memory". This is caused by having 1GB RAM or more. It's a known issue and the MS knowledge base describes a fix which involves installing SR1 and SR2. This works fine with XP.

SR2 will only run if it detects dlls and registry keys installed by SR1. In Vista, SR1 appears to install correctly, but SR2 says it's not there, so the "Out of Memory" message persists.

I agree with everything you say about Vista and Access 97, but I'm in a cleft stick. My client sees no reason to spend lots of money on new versions of MS Office to fix something which isn't broken for them.

What I'll probably end up doing is making my laptop dual boot, but that can be a painful and time-consuming process.

Thanks for trying to help

You may want to point out to your client that, as the overheads of supporting out-of-date software can be appreciably higher, he can expect higher support charges than with current software.

That may help them to change their perspective on the matter ;)
