If you use optimistic locking (No Locks), Access doesn't lock a record or page until a user saves changes to it, and data might be more readily available as a result. If you use pessimistic locking (Edited Records), Access locks the record as soon as a user begins to edit it records might be locked for longer periods of time, but users don't have to decide whose changes to save if two users edit the same record simultaneously.
