VB question

Hi,

Not sure if I am posting to the right place --

I am trying to create a calculated field that has a specific URL as a constant: \\MyNetwork\MyFolder

- when the user clicks on the field, they can add to the constant, e.g. \\MyNetwork\MyFolder\NewFile

- this completed URL then gets stored someplace useful

here is the code I have so far. I'm getting errors at the last line:
NewUrl.Value = NewFilePath

How do I store the calculated variable NewFilePath in the textbox NewUrl?

rivate Sub NewUrl_BeforeUpdate(Cancel As Integer)

Dim NewFile As String
Dim NewFilePath As String
Dim FilePath As String

FilePath = "\\MyNetwork\MyFolder"
NewFile = NewUrl.Value
NewFilePath = FilePath + NewFile
NewUrl.Value = NewFilePath

End Sub

NewFilePath = FilePath + NewFile
NewUrl.Value = NewFilePath

End Sub
Since you're not using numbers, try the "&" symbol instead of the "+" symbol

Actually, I think that your problem is that you are trying to assign a value to the NewUrl field in the BeforeUpdate event of the same field. Your are telling it to do your code before it changes the value of NewUrl, but with your very code you attempt to change the value. You need to separate these out.

My suggestion would be to make the change (your code) occur via a command button or to have a separate textbox that receives the value. For example, you could have a NewUrl field that the user types into and then a txtNewPath textbox that displays the results of your code.

In addition, you might have an error if the NewUrl field is blank or null. You could put some catch code in there to prevent that from causing errors in your program.

You might try this:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. Dim NewFile as String
  2. Dim NewFilePath As String
  3. Dim FilePath As String
  4.
  5. FilePath = "\\MyNetwork\MyFolder"
  6. NewFile = nz(NewUrl.value,"")
  7. NewFilePath = FilePath & NewFile
  8. 'Assuming that you have a textbox called txtNewPath to display the results
  9. txtNewPath.Value = NewFilePath
  10.
This would alleviate the problem of attempting to change the value of something before you allow the value to be changed :).

Thanks Luke! This clears things up. :)
