DLookup Troubles

I'm trying to use DLookup to assign a value to a field in a form based on the value of what has been entered into another field. So I'm using the syntax below (taken directly from the Help screen). This works fine as long as the field on the form (i.e. "ShipperID" in the example below) is numeric. If it's a text field then the control returns an error. How come?

= DLookup("[CompanyName]", "Shippers", "[ShipperID] = " _
& Forms!Shippers!ShipperID)

When you are referencing text you need to enclose it in Quotes. When it is numeric you would not use quotes.

In VBA:
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. If isnumeric(Forms!Shippers!ShipperID) then
  2.  DLookup("[CompanyName]", "Shippers", "[ShipperID] = " & Forms!Shippers!ShipperID)
  3. Else
  4.  DLookup("[CompanyName]", "Shippers", "[ShipperID] = '" & Forms!Shippers!ShipperID) & "'"
  5. End if
In SQL statement or Control Source:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. iIf (isnumeric(Forms!Shippers!ShipperID),DLookup("[CompanyName]", "Shippers", "[ShipperID] = " & Forms!Shippers!ShipperID) , DLookup("[CompanyName]", "Shippers", "[ShipperID] = '" & Forms!Shippers!ShipperID) & "'")
