Making a query statement work

I have been trying to get a query to look in a different column in order to categorize information for a report if the column that it is pulling from currently is null. Please Help...

<>Null in the critiria for W/E your requried field is should keep the qurery from looking at any null records if that will help, please leave more info on the problem

Beginner in Access
In one of the query fields, put an expression (View -> Totals -> Change to expression) and put: my_field: iif(Nz([first_field],"")="",[second_field],[first_field]
