Open the help file for the CreateObject function. It explains the uses of the CreateObject function and states what kind of applications are available for it's use. I believe most if not all Office applications support automation as well as several other microsoft applications.

Applications and or programs that do not support automation can be run through the Shell command. I suggest also taking a looking at the help file for the Shell command as conveniently the example for it shows how to open the calculator from Access.

The best way to get to these specific help files is to put your cursor on the word "CreateObject" or "Shell" in the VBA editor window and then press F1. This will bring you directly to that help file.
