Maximum tables ID entries

I maintain a very large ACCESS database(2003, WINDOWS XP) not designed by me, I just try to cope with it) for a customer who exports meat to MANY countries in the world.

The structure consists of 3 front end databases ( MDE on each user's computer) and 2 backend datasbases on a server. The backend DB's are MDB's the front end DB's are MDE's

The MAIN DB calls up whichever Application (exporting or trading) is to be run.... it is then linked to the proper Backend DB.

Very recently I've been getting a message from the MDE compiler that it has a limit of 2048 Table ID entries.... that now seems to be exceeded. AND it won't compile the MDB into an MDE.

I've taken a lot of old junk out of the front end DB, ( 18 reports, and 16 queries). This does not help. I've localized the problem down to a set of 4 reports and 3 queries. (they are a family of reports for slightly different situations). If I remove 3 of the reports the 2048 message will go away, and the MDB will compile into and MDE. Unforunately all 4 reports ARE necessary.

Does anyone know about this limit, and are there cures (compiler settings) ? Rearchitecting is out of the question. I don't want to expose the MDB's to the users.

I have a feeling that there is something spurious somewhere that is causing the complier to think there are a lot more entires than actual (linkage in a query, bad source code VB in a form)?
