Shared Remote Database

P: 3
I would like to use an access database as a shared database on a remote website. I don't know if it is possible, but this is what i would like to do with this database:

- Use it to run a database driven website
- Maintain it via a client application and via the website.

As i would like to maintain it both locally and remote via website forms written in ASP, I don't want to sync the information between the server and a client database.
I would like the client application to maintain the remote database live as if it was a local database.

I would like to know if it is possible to use for example a VB application on a client computer to maintain the access database as if it was a local database.

If it is possible to run a database driven website based on the data in the database while it is being maintained via the client application. This means that locking shouldn't be an issue. A customer must be able to consult the website information which is pulled from the database even if that record is currently maintained. (eg as long as the changes aren't saved, the website shows the current information, when saved the website shows the new information)

This should work the other way around also. When a customer logs in to the website and changes his order online - and so updates the access database via the ASP form - one should be able to read this updated record immediately via the local client immediately after the clients update.

Is it possible to read/write/delete records live in a database both via ASP form and local client application without having locking issues as the information from the database is pulled for website displaying purposes.

Technology used via

- a simple access database
- ASP (not ASP.NET) to run the forms on the website
- VB written client application

OR is this only possible when working with MySQL database
and eg PHP as website script language.

I think you're asking the wrong people here.
I would expect that Access can handle what you need, but how you would go about this with those tools would better be asked in those particular forums.

Access can certainly handle multi-user access. How your other code interfaces to that is beyond the scope of the Access forum.

Thanks for your response.
This was my first post on this forum, any suggestions to where i should post this question in order to get some nice response?

VB forum or the ASP forum?
I'll try the VB forum.

Thanks again.

It's perfectly acceptable to duplicate questions as long as they're in different (and relevant) forums.
Good luck :)
