access help on combo boxes?

Hello everyone,
Well I decided that I had to learn how to do database, the subject facinated me and I am totally hooked.
I am following a scenario from a book called "database projects in Access for advanced level"
I've been doing fine. all my queries are working, I can add information to them so I thought everything was going fine, for my first attempt.
then I seem to have hit a slight problem.

I created a form from a query, its a driving school scenario and i took a working query lesson cost and developed the form.

when i come to add a combo box the wizard doesnt open and i get a message saying its unbound?
so something is obviously wrong? I can find no help in the book about what the problem is so though i would come here to the experts.

I know this is probably a very simple issue, but please help me to learn more.

Can you tell us what you were doing at this point, and what you were trying to achieve with the ComboBox?

sorry all I am very new to database.
I have created a form using a query.
I am trying to add a box to drop down and show id numbers of students or instructors.
its so much information to take in at the moment. think I will need years to learn all of this.

any suggestions on other good books that I might find useful or some good basic links.

I am alright creating tables adding input masks stuff like that.
I get a bit lost creating tables in SQL so thought i would back track a bit and start from scratch.

its an amazing subject.

I find the "Access (insert version) for Dummies" books really good for beginners.

If you look at the top of the Access Forum, you will find (Full List of Articles and Code in this Section), which has links to various helpful articles.

thanks for those suggestions guys and girls,
I will get the book access for dummies and probably the one for SQL as well.
I looked at the forum headings above, but they were a bit over my head at the moment.
i think that I solved the initial problem that i had with the database, I needed to press the wizard button on the tool box to activate the combo box.
think that has solved my first problem

you are probably going to get lots of posts of me for a while.
thanks again

One of the big problems I see here and on other forums is that many of the people posting questions don't have a grasp of even the most basic terms in Access. People who don't know the difference between fields and controls, or forms and reports, come here and post, but because they don't have this basic knowledge, they can't frame a cogent question. For this reason I think it's a great idea for anyone starting out in Access to start with Access for Dummies, or one of its clones. You probably won't use it for long, but it'll give you a good foundation in the ABCs of Access.

I agree,
my husband had to do an assignment on access database, his lecuture required him to create it in SQL, neither he or I have ever made even one database before. it was crazy we spent weeks and weeks trying to create the tables and then inputing the data, we managed to create a few forms and got stuck. didnt have a clue.

thats why i am spending the summer determined to learn how to do things properly.

hope you can all put up with me.

With an attitude like that - I can tell you we've dealt with more difficult cases.
If any of the answers are cased in terminology you don't understand, just say so.
Have fun here :)

It's nice, isn't it, Ade, to find someone who really wants to learn, as opposed to someone who just wants all their work done for them? ;0)>

thanks both of you for the nice comments,
I felt that they accepted my husband on the course without enough background knowledge they assume that you know what to do and it our case we didnt.
there was no real help available. but I am so determined. to get to grips with this so complex subject.
anyway i am coping so far with my first proper database.

i am going to create this simple one from the book and then go back to the course assignment and see if i can do it properly.
I am a bit concerned over queries. if i can post the screen shot of the relationships I will. but there are so many different tables I am a bit lost.
hope you all dont mind helping me.

We can't all promise to be around all of the time (though most of us are one way or another), but there should always be someone around to help. To be honest, most of the difficulties are from poor expression and communication than complicated Access questions. I'm sure you'll get all the support you need here.
