Unable to Import an external excel spreadsheet into Access 2003

1
Hi

I'm pretty new to MS Access so please be patient....
I have a user that is trying to import an external excel spreadsheet into MS access 2003 by using the File - Get external data - Import.
She is also running Access 97 and it works fine into that.

The error she gets is:
You have encountered an error and MS office access needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvenience. The information you were working on might be lost. MS access can try to compact and repair your open database.....

The user was able to import this excel spreadsheet previously into MS access 2003 but its recently stopped working.

I've tried reinstalling MS access 2003 but this has had no effect.

Any idea's?

Has the database been converted to Access 2003?
If so did you try to compile the database from the VBA editor window?
Have you tried open the Excel file to see if it is opening OK?
