How large should I let database get ?

Morning all,

I've got an Access database running on a network at work. The current file
size with 3 months of data is 251mb. How large should I let the database get
before I start achieving previous months ?

Thanks

With a database growing at that rate I would archive unwanted data as soon
as it becomes redundant. In any case there is an absolute maximum of 2Gb on
your database size, which you will hit sooner rather then later at your
current rate of increase.

How big is it after a compact and repair? I do a compact and repair on all
BE files once a week using a function in a MDB executed by Task manager.

Is the 251MB new data or has it been imported from other systems? Is the
growth from text data or are you storing images and other non text
information?

As others have said, there is a 2GB limit. If you are truly creating 84MB of
new data every month you should look at changing your BE to SQL Server.

Access does not release the disk space when records are deleted until you
compact. Doing Compact and Repair on a regular schedule will keep the file
clean and may reduce the number of DB corruptions.

Typical every day wear and tear. <smile>

Compacting weekly is about all that is required. Even monthly. I wouldn't bother
doing it every day as the first time someone goes to insert or update records Jet
will expand the MDB by 5% or 10% anyhow.
