Charts In Forms Not Showing Under Vista

P: n/a
Several of my Access 2003 databases are exhibiting the same problem
under Windows Vista. Charts in forms are not showing any data.
Reports are not affected. Charts in reports display as they should.

The chart object in forms appears but contains no data. It appears
to be a screen painting problem because if I open a report or another
form on top of the form that is not showing the chart, when the second
report or form is closed, the form with the chart that was sitting
underneath then shows its chart data. Very strange.

Is anyone else seeing this? Any ideas on a solution?

Any help is appreciated.

Am I the only one seeing this under Vista? This isn't only happening
in Access 2003 but 2007 as well. If I create a new test database with
a simple table of data and then chart that data on a form, the chart
data doesn't show when I open the form. The rectangle where the chart
object should appear, gives a flicker a couple of milliseconds after
the form is opened. This is the time when the chart should appear,
but it doesn't. It doesn't seem to matter what type of chart it is -
bar, pie etc. - the data just refuses to appear.

As posted earlier, charts on reports are not affected and display
normally. Can someone please confirm that I am not the only one
seeing this behaviour? Is this some weird problem with my graphics
card/driver?

I've also noticed that the Access 2007 chart wizard seems to be buggy,
with the sample chart not always showing when it should.

Hi Wayne,

I've just moved to a vista pc and immediately experienced the same
problem as you though I'm still using access 2002. Charts in forms
would not display when opened. I've managed to find a workround
though.
Here's how:
1. Change the chart's visible property to No.
2. Set the form's TimerInterval to 1000 milliseconds (could play
around with this figure but 1000 works)
3. Set the form's timer event to return the chart's visible property
to True
And the chart appears.

There's a few enhancements in the code I'm using because I use my
databases on computers with xp and vista I have a function to check
the operating system first. If it's not vista then make the chart
visible in the Form_Open event. Also, whatever the OS I change the
TimerInterval to a long period so the event isn't triggered again
after the chart is displayed.

GetOperatingSystem is the function returning a string with the OS
name.

Public IsVista As Boolean
Const conLongWait = 36000000# '(10 hours)

Private Sub Form_Open(Cancel As Integer)
If InStr(GetOperatingSystem, "Vista") = 0 Then
Me.ChartByYear.Visible = True
IsVista = False
Me.TimerInterval = conLongWait
Else
IsVista = True
End If
End Sub

Private Sub Form_Timer()
' ** Make chart object visible after delay to overcome windows
vista error
If IsVista Then
Me.ChartByYear.Visible = True
Me.TimerInterval = conLongWait
End If
End Sub

Seems to work OK so hope this helps,
Mel

Thanks for the reply. Since my original post and followup post on
this subject over a month ago the silence has been deafening. I
thought that I must be the only one seeing it. I guess many people
aren't using Vista yet - maybe they are the sane ones! I have it in a
dual boot config with XP and installed it for the express purpose of
checking if my databases ran OK under it. That's when I found the
chart problem. Other than that I am still using XP exclusively.
Vista has way too many niggling problems at this point in time.

I wonder if MS is aware of the chart problem? Maybe one of the MVPs
that frequent this forum could verify the problem for themselves and
then flag it to MS. I've found that calling their tech support desk
with a problem like this usually goes nowhere.

There is another issue under Vista with the MS Intellipoint 6 mouse
software. If the user is not using Aero, Intellipoint 6 causes screen
flicker usually when a list is displayed, for instance in the Outlook
inbox. I Googled and lots of people are seeing it in many different
apps. In regard to Access, it causes screen flicker in the
relationships window. I spoke with tech support many times about this
and they finally convinced themselves that it is indeed a problem with
Intellipoint 6. They told me that it would be escalated and an update
would be forthcoming. That was about 2 months ago and last time I
checked they still haven't updated the Intellipoint software.

I posted about the flicker issue on this forum back in April, but
there were no replies. Maybe you'd like to give it a try. You must
be running one of the Vista schemes other than Aero to see it though
and of course be using Intellipoint 6.

Hi Wayne,

Sorry I'm not using Intellipoint 6 so can't check out the flickering
issue you've highlighted. I do have another problem with Access 2002
under vista though.

Due to the size of some of databases I have routinely set the 'Compact
on Close' option. Under XP this worked fine but under vista it causes
access to crash presenting me with the 'Access has stopped working'
dialog. I haven't kept any stats on this but I reckon it's crashing
about 50% of database closedowns. Have you noticed this behaviour at
all? Only solution is to uncheck the compact option.

Biggest annoyance so far with vista was that Outlook 2002 e-mail
account passwords are not saved. At least it was until I switched to
Thunderbird for good.

Hi Mel. Yes, I'm seeing what you have observed with Access 2003 under
Vista randomly falling over on closing a database. I hadn't linked it
to the fact that the "Compact on close" option has been enabled.

My hope is that those who read these forums that have MS's ear will
make them aware of these types of problems and that they will be
fixed. My other hope is that clients are smart enough not to migrate
to Vista until at least SP1. Hopefully by that time some of these
issues will have been sorted.

Regards.
