Why might a table lose its keyfield setting

MLH
I have a table, tblCorrespondence, that has been losing its
KeyField setting. The field is named CorrespID and is an
AutoNumber type field.

This has happened in A97 on 3 occasions recently I discover
it due to the occurrence of another issue I'm debugging. The
design view of the table shows no "key" to the left of the name
of the field. I'm unable to set the key when this happens. A
msg saying the table is READ ONLY pops up when I do. I have
to shut down & restart Access 97 for the problem to go away.
When I do & reopen the database for the first time, the KeyField
setting is back and all appears normal. The relationships never
seem to be affected. That is, they remain.

I'm wondering fi some condition or state that Access gets put
into temporarily as a result of my other problem could cause a
table to teporarily appear as if it has no keyfield setting?
