HELP!! Email fields and getting to work

I have several email fields in my Customer Contact database. The fields are set up as hyperlinks. When I enter an email address for the customers they appear as a hyperlink. When I click on them it tells me page is not available. I understand that it is trying to open a web site. However When I type the protocol mailto: prior to the email address in the field and then click it will open the mail program with the customers email address in the send to of the composing email. My question is, is there a way to get the mailto: protocol into the field description so that the any email address in the field will open the mail program. I have created this database for the use of our sales staff to utilize, as they receive email addresses for their customers they update the email address field in the database for future use. I do not want them to have to type mailto: before each email address they enter. It just seems crazy that this cannot be addressed in the field description. Please someone help I have been trying to figure this out for days!!! Thanks so much in advance.

DoCmd.SendObject acSendNoObject, , , Forms![frm_MAIN]![email], , , , , True

This code would be used instead of a hyperlink.

Only other option is to have the textbox where user enters the email as an unbound textbox and have a hidden textbox on the form for the bound field. Then in the after update event of the unbound textbox concatenate the "mailto:" to the beginning of the address.

I've never written code before, so I'm not sure what I'm looking at. I have been researching and found where to enter it, however not sure how it links up with the field. The area above in the brackets [], is that the form name and the field names respectively? Would I make the field a text field instead of the hyperlink as stated in the second response? Thanks so much for your help!
