what is defined as a duplicate, is it one field or the whole row

u could try placing DISTINCT or DISTINCTROW after the initial select
i.e.
select distinct a, b, c from mytable

difference between distinct and distinctrow

distinct: removes records that contains duplicate data in the selected fields
distinctrow: removes on whole record rather than fields
