How can you Load OLE Objects into a table using a recordset?

4
How can I load files on a file server that have many different types of files into a table. The files include: Word, Excel Powerpoint, Outlook emails, bmp, gif, tif, jpg, c++, etc. I would like to display the icons of thes objects through an OLE bound control on a form. I can load them individually by hand, but when you have thousands of them to load it would be easier to loop through them and embed them in the table with the class name.

Can anyone help.

I tried streaming them and that does not appear to work because of active x control issue with permissions here.

Like a dog chasing his tail...

Sorry, I was just remembering a time when I had this same issue. I finally got it working the only thing was most everything was 100k or less yet when imported you have to account for the OLE object container itself. MS Access has a 2 gig limit and it doesn't take many OLE objects before you hit this limit. I would strongly suggest that you link to these items then call them as they are needed. If you are insistent about importing them in the manner that you described make sure you back it up before hand so that when you hit the limit and your DB acts like it was run over you won't get to upset.

Let us know what your decision is and I am sure someone will be happy to guide you. I would be glad to help you import the Objects but I haven't imported any OLE objects in years due to the issue I mentioned.

I am using a server as the back end. The problem I find is that when I try to stream the data in it does not work. They have active x security real tight here. I have chunked and appended the data into the table. I would then have to write the data to the users local network drive to link it to an ole object control. The problem is that there are many different formats of blob data and each record could have 1 to 20 blob items.
If there is a better way that works I am all ears. So far this has been a lesson in futility. You would think by now Microsoft would get this problem resolved in a better fashion.

I am using a server as the back end.
Are you referring to SQL Server as a database back end and your using MS Access as a front end?

This is where things get sticky, I have never used Sybase, so I don't know what commands i can or can't use. MS Access has many functions and possible ways of achieving what you want however different back ends can be particular about things. For instance If I try to run a query from Access to update oracle there are some functions that will work in the query that I can't use because Oracle doesn't recognize them.

I will do a little research and see what I an come up with..

This could help you achieve what you are after.

The difficult part is obtaining the class Names for all of your objects.
Let me know if this helps.
