Information Management

Hi

This is my first time posting so hopefully I will get this right.

I have recently taken on a project for a small organization who are hoping to organize all of their files in one central area giving access to all employees (approximately 10). All documents are Word or WordPerfect format. The employees wish to be able to perform searches and find documents with the click of a button which is basically impossible with their current system.

My problem is I don't know where to start with this. I did some research and found products such as AskSam and General Knowledge Base. However, I don't know if that is too much or can I simply use something like Microsoft Access?

What do you mean this is impossible with their current system? Their OS doesn't have a search option?

You can build a file search system with Access.

They are currently networked without a server and Shared folders. However this is not efficient enough for what they do. So they need everything stored in a centralized location (file server ???) and then use what application to search for particular files? I have not used Access in the past so could you please elaborate?

If they're going to get a file server then whatever OS they're using should be able to search files in that server so there really is no need for a third party solution. Perhaps this would be better in the Networking or OS specific forum?

Perhaps if you clarified the situation a little. What do you mean by searching for a document on the click of a button?

The confusion has arisen because if they get a server networked into their system then presumably that server will be mapped to each computer and they can access the files the same as they would files on their local drives.

However, if you are talking about designing a database of the files and folders on the network this would be very difficult to maintain with files presumably being added and deleted on a regular basis.
