VBA syntax

Can someone please tell me why the below doesn't work?

Commandtext="Update temp set temp.fieldname=[" & fldname & "];"

where fldname ="Purp" and is defined as a string in the code.

Thanks,

Rick

This works
Commandtext = "Update temp set temp.[fieldname]="" & fldName & "";"

So does this
Commandtext = "Update temp set temp.fieldname="" & fldName & "";"
