Question about SQL

Rabbit

I may be transferring to a job soon where I will be doing some advanced SQL but I'm not that advanced at SQL. I'm not looking for specifics yet but what are some of the functions I should be aware of? I know the basic ones like Select Into, Update, Insert, Delete, and Joins.

And on a slightly different note, which may be better posted in a different forum, what do I need to know about SQL servers in general and how to work with them? At this point I don't know what SQL server they're using.

I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the general direction. I'll google the rest.

Hi Rabbit, I think you are best to go for the google approach. SQL Server and SQL itself are huge subjects that take up many books and training programs. not the kind of thing we could casually discuss here.

From your starting point though, you could do worse than genning up with the Access help system. It has a hard-to-find section on Jet SQL.
Using A2K3 select Help / Microsoft Office Access Help then click on Table of Contents then Microsoft Jet SQL Reference.
In other versions I'd just search the help system for Jet SQL.
This is by no means a full and complete reference, but it will give you a lot of the concepts before moving on to more specific references.

Jet is not the same standard as sql server so maybe better to to google either sql or t-sql

LOL - Jet & standard in the same sentence.
You're right of course Will, but I was thinking of a very simple gathering together of some of the concepts rather than using as a standard reference.
Transact-SQL is a lot more conformant with the standards, but is itself a super-set so wouldn't be too great as a standard reference either. I just thought as Rabbit has (and is building more) experience in Access that it would be a good starting point for him.

Right now I'm not sure if I want to go over there but it can't hurt to learn it.

When you say 'over there' do you have a specific flavour in mind (SQL Server, Oracle etc)? I was responding with the idea of your just building up general SQL skills.

I meant general as well because I don't know yet what they use.

Well, good luck in whatever you decide to do. You seem to have the right attitude for such work, so go on and get into it I say.
