A real tough one

kev
Hi folks,

I am halfway finishing up my project when i was bogged down with a
request, something than i can barely chew.
Let me start on straightaway. I have created a database for equipments,
meaning any new equipment bought will have to be registered and go
through three phases which is Safety Level 1, Safety Level 2 and Safety
Level 3.
This works very fine. Now their new request is to create a new separate
database where it is supposed to store all first of its kind equipment.
So when a user comes in with a new equipment, they will have to check
the new database if there is any equipment matching.if it is matching,
then they will not have to go through the three phases of Safety Level
1, Safety Level 2 and Safety Level 3 instead they just need to fill in
one form to complete registration.

At this point, i am clueless. Perhaps, someone can share with me a
headstart on this.
If you have done a similar project or is there any article on this to
read on?????
Pls help.

Regards,
Kev

Kev,

Firstly apologies if this post duplicates - I am having some posting
issues this morning.

If I understand you correctly then the solution should be reasonably
simple.
I guess you have categories of equipment for eg Saws - and all types of
saws are in this category. So what you are telling me is that if
someone gets a new saw you want them to check whether the saw has been
entered before - and follow a different process depending on whether it
has or hasn't.

If this is what you want then I would't create another database
necessarily.

I would create a table (or add to your current equipment table) to
store all of the current equipment. (It is probably best if you have a
category field so the user can use this to serach, eg by all saws or
all hammers).
Create a form for the user to search this table to view the listings
for similar items to the one they are about to enter. You could have
two buttons - one to take the user to the registration form (if they
find the product is already listed) and one to take the user through
the safety stages (if the product is not already listed).

If - after somebody enters a new piece of equipment to the db - you
want this to be one of the items searched the next time a user searches
for an existing piece of equipment then I would just add the current
equipment to an existing equipment table in your db.

Hope this is close to the solution you asked for - and that it helps!
