Relative Path reference function works on local but not on server

P: n/a
I am fairly new using functions to return file info and I made an assumption
that a function working on a local machine would work fine on a server.

I have searched several Access books to find a how one can use reference a
relative path in an application.
I found a function in Access Dev Handbook which in fact returns a relative
path but not (apparently) for a file on a server share.

I tested the function and it works fine on a local drive (i.e. returnds full
pathname of a file on a local machine but when I copy the identical database
without any change and try to find the file on the server it returns the
local drive path version. I thought perhaps the function somehow started
it's search on the local drive so I renamed the folders and files to stop it
but it still returned C:\blah\blah\foofile.txt which then, in fact no longer
existed.
By the way this in not a FrontEnd/Backend database either.

Using Access 2003
What am I missing here.

TIA
