How to check if value is already in the database table

Hello All. I have a question as to how to perform a check on the
database table once the user enters a value (ie on textbox lost focus),
etc Once the field that holds the value is filled with data, how do I
query the database and alert the user that the value is already in the
database, and prompt them to enter a new value.

Please help. I have a dealine to meet. Thanks.

if it's a bound control, put a unique index on the field using table
design mode
if it's an unbound control, use the dCount() function
