subform only shows one record

P: 15
I have a form with a subform in it. The subform is based on a query that shows all records and fields (so the user can see what they have already entered).
When I look at the form in form view, however, the subform's record counter says "1 of 1" and only shows the first record returned by the query. The query contains about 10 records at the moment, so why can't I see all records, and why is the record counter claiming that there is only 1 record?
Below this one record, there is an asterisk in the row counter and "mainform" (the name of the parent form) appears in the first field.
I am using access 97 and would describe myself as being fairly "beginnery" to Access.
One minor question: how can I change the field captions in the subform?
Many thanks,

To change the captions right click on the field in design view go to properties and type in the caption name you want in the caption property.

A subform has filtered records, it is only showing the record that relates to the record on the mainform. What do you want to show?

Thanks.
As regards the subform, I want it to show all the records in the table. For instance, say the main form related to table "alpha" and there were 20 records in it so far.
While the user is inputting record no.21 by using the form, I want him to be able to see the previous 20 records, displayed in the subform.
Cheers,
Michael
