importing xls with invalid field names

I need to automate a process which imports a new excell spreadsheet every
day. The spreadsheet has blank columns so access ( macro -transfer
spreadsheet) assigns fieldnames "noname1", "noname2" etc.
The spreadsheet also has in its first row abbreviations such as DEPT. (with
period) which access turns into DEPT#.
How can I get the xls imported without the blank collumns and with just
"DEPT" (no period)??

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Import the table as it is. then create a query that moves the
desired data to a permanent table built the way you want it.
Then delete the import table.

Hi:

If the daily spreadsheet always has the same structure, you can do the
import by hand once, save the import specifications, and then appy them
when you do the daily automated import.
