Running two queries concurrently on linked tables

Hi all,

we got here one database which has several linked tables, whereas the
link points to several csv-files. Currently we also have 2 different
queries using the linked tables. Now one of us is opening query 1 and
the other one is trying to open query 2 after query 1 was opened. But
opening query 2 (from a different computer) is not allowed and gives
the following error message:

"The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file 'query 1'. It
is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission
to view its data."

We are not even openening the same query! I can hardly believe that you
cannot run two different queries at one time! Are there any options we
have to set?

System: Win 2003 Server
Access Version 2003

Split your database and create separate frontends for each user. Make sure
that the Default record locking is set to Edited records on your backend.
One of the main "rules" of a multiuser Access implementation is an mdb for
each user. To find out how to split your db type split in the Access help.

of the queries are using multiple CSVs. We have no idea what the
attributes/properties are on the CSVs or folder. We have no idea if the
mdb is already split or not. We don't know if this is an Action query
or a Select statement. We don't even know why they guy is getting a
message about query1 when he's opening query2. Maybe "WITH OWNERACCESS
OPTION" needs to be added to the SQL statement. I think its something
more than splitting the mdb.

You're asking for locking problems when more than one user tries to access a
single mdb! Why not go ahead and split?

Absolute rubbish. If the application is properly designed, and the
table locking parameters are correctly set to shared and current
record only, there should be no problem when linking a .mdb to
another .mdb

The original poster's problem is that he's got linked .csv files.
Access has no mechanism for locking records in a .csv file so it
locks the whole file. Access won't even let one user open two
instances of a .csv in the same query.

Even the same user cannot open the two queries on the same
machine at the same time, if they point to .csv files.

Import your tables to a back end .mdb and the problem will go
away. You'll also have much improved performance.
