Forms slow when linked to live Backend but fine when linked to exact copy of backend in same location

I have been developing a new application (FE on local drive) which is
attached to tables in a BE on a server. For testing purposes I had a copy
of the BE in the same folder as the live BE and the application and forms
loaded quickly. The application is now ready to go live and using the
linked table manager I have tried relinking the tables to the live BE. The
tables (around 50) relink but it takes a while through the linked table
manager. When I try to use the app on the live BE, forms run very slowly.
I have tried replacing the test BE with a copy of the live FE and linking
the app to the copy and the forms run fine. I have read the usual
performance FAQs. I'm running Access 97 and have tried compacting and
repairing the live BE. Any suggestions?

Thanks

The test BE probably had only you in it, the live BE probably has other
users. This will be slower, but should still be acceptable. However, there
are some things you can do to improve this. I have seen as much as a 25%
(subjective) improvement by incorporating "ldb locking" in the front-end
file. For this and other multi-user performance tips, see this link.

Is the BE actually on the same server as you are?

We have/had an application that works quite acceptably when the BE was
on the same server BUT if the user was trying to logon from a different
server, then forget it - it would NOT work for us.
