In some runtime installs of A97 databases want to bury a text file for future reference

MLH
Would like to bury an obscure text file in a DIR on workstation
onto which a A97 runtime app is being installed: CustLog.txt.

I'm thinking c:\program files. In environments running MS windows
from a file server, I seem to recall that workstations do not usually
have a c:\windows directory. I'm wondering if they even have a
c:\program files directory. I don't run windows from a server based
installation nor do I have ready access to any workstations that do.

So I thought I'd ask here. Do workstations running windows across
a LAN typically have a c:\program files directory?

AFAIK - All installations of Windows 2000 and XP have a c:\program files. I
gather that you are trying to hide the file on the user workstation. It
would be quite prominent in c:\program files. You might want to use
%windir% - an environment variable that points to the windows installation
directory. I don't know how far "back" its use goes, but it would exist on
all NT, 2000 and XP systems.

If you install the A97 runtime, you can copy the file to
the A97 runtime folder. That folder gets the Add-In files
(mda) anyway, so it's a not totally unnatural place to put
configuration data.

But if it is a small amount of configuration data, I would
bury the data in the registry.

It was common to run earlier versions of Office from a server.
It is rather unusual to run Office 97 from a server.
It is not possible to run later versions of Office from a server.

Running Office 97 from a server was not recommended, and
was quite a lot of work to maintain. With disk prices
as cheap as they are now, I would be surprised if anyone
had still maintained that kind of system.

"Program Files" is a magic folder. It is normally on
the c drive, but that is not a requirement.

I hope some Network or Windows expert can educate me here on
"running MS windows from a file server".

How is this accomplished?
What version of Windows is required?
How prevalent is this configuration?

Sounds like a weird description of a thin client, in which case the
workstation may well not even have a hard drive never mind any folders.
