fatal error trying to close form from subform via code

On my main form, frmCompanies, I have a tab control with two pages, each
page having a subform. One of these subform has it's own subform, and on
this subform is a command button, cmdGotoCand. When this button is clicked
the following code runs to close the main form and open a new form. It
always gives me a fatal error. If I do the same thing from a button on the
main form, it works fine. Any ideas? (Access 2002 on Win xp pro)

Private Sub cmdGotoCand_Click()
DoCmd.OpenForm "frmCandidateDetail"
DoCmd.Close acForm, "frmCompanies"
End Sub

thanks
-John
