A97 graphing (x,y) coord's - how to do it?

MLH
I have 800 rows in a table named tbl800CircleDataPoints.
There are two number fields named [X] and [Y] in the table.
Both are number (single) Type fields.

The data points in the [X] field range from -2 to +2, stepping by
0.01. The data points in the [Y] field range from -2 to +2, stepping
by 0.01. For each of the 800 records, [X]^2 + [Y]^2 = 4. Its a set
of data points for a circle, radius 2, center @ the origin.

Each time I use A97 graph tool to create a graph, I get something
other than a circle displayed. I can easily create the circle with the
same data in MSoft Excel. But Access has me stumped.

Is there someone who will tell me, step-by-step I'm afraid, how to
instruct Access to draw me a graph of these data points that will
look like a circle?

Hi,
I want to create a chart
value (y-axis) vs. time (x-axis). In fact very similar to the
xy(scatter) example in the graph10.chm help-file.

I ran into problems, so I started a very basic *.mdb file.

It contains one table with ID, Date, and Price (Value) Column
ID is automatically assigned
Date is in the short date format
and Price is a long integer
I entered 10 datasets.

Then I created a query (the simplest one I could imagine)
SELECT tbl_Basis.Date, tbl_Basis.Price
FROM tbl_Basis
ORDER BY tbl_Basis.Date;

Then I created a form and inserted a "MS Graph Chart" Object, and set
the row source to the query. I changed the chart type to scatter, and
the number format of the x-axis to Date ("14/03/2001").

Now the problem: When I execute the form, all my data points are on
01/01/1900 and have different colours. When I change the x-axis number
format to general, they are all at "1".

Why would that be? I tried setting lond date instead of number format in
the table and in the properties of the query I set different number
formats - nothing has changed.

I appreciate any help,
thanks,
Claus

Hi
Few questions about charts get answered in this group, maybe it is a
black art only understood by Excel users. I hope this reply doesn't
put off anyone more expert answering you.

The problem is that charts are based on totals queries and regard
plotting an ordinary X-Y graph as some kind of PhD project.

I usually introduce an exta variable in the data which always has the
value 1, and then make the chart regard this as one of a series of
values to be plotted.

You can use a query like that below as source for a scatter plot:
TRANSFORM Max(tbl_Basis.price) AS MaxOfPrice SELECT tbl_Basis.mydate
FROM tbl_Basis GROUP BY tbl_Basis.mydate PIVOT 1;
If you look at the output of the query you can see what input the
chart expects.

I have used mydate as a table field as I don't like to use reserved
words.
iIf there are two items with the same date it will just show
the biggest. Of course if you prefer you can use SumOf rather than
MaxOf and just group by month or whatever.

David, you are certainly right. Its confusing. The graph wizard,
for me, creates a graph 4 quarters, East, West and North sales
areas. Where does all that bullshxx come from. I have X and Y
coordinates, right? Nothing more.

Do you think I need to add another field to my table? Perhaps
one named [GrosslyMisunderstoodByTheADT] and fill it with
the value 1 in all 800 records will do. I am not sure how it will
be used by Access to tell MS Graph "put a point on the cartesian
plane at (2,0) or any of the other 799 points. If you can tell me how
to substitute my table and my 3 field in your SQL, that would help.
I'm afraid I'm lost.
Nov 13 '05 #3
MLH
I modified your SQL in an attempt to achieve your suggested objective.
My SQL is shown below. Running it produces only 400 records, as I
was afraid of. And, changing the Chart object's RowSource property
to that query did not produce a circle for me. The same east, north,
south, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarter crap still shows up on my graph.

TRANSFORM Max(tbl800CircleDataPoints.Y) AS MaxOfPrice
SELECT tbl800CircleDataPoints.X
FROM tbl800CircleDataPoints
GROUP BY tbl800CircleDataPoints.X
PIVOT 1;

Simple works for me, so I better restructure my post...
I have table with 2 fields: [X] and [Y] and 1 record.
The value in both fields of the single record is 1. I
would like ms graph to create me a graph showing
a dot (or some other object) at the point (1,1) on the
graph. Nothing else, no lables, titles, axes titles -
nothing. Just a big PLUS mark and a single dot.
The plus sign being the coordinate axes. Can it do that?

Have you tried the chart wizard choosing a scatter chart as the type?

What was the problem? I tested with the single record table that you described
and it charted a single "dot" at 1,1. Isn't that what you want?

I'm getting the same junk as before. I let the wizard build
the graph. I click the chart/graph tool, tell it which table
to use for data, pick the 2 fields and no matter what I do
after that, Access gives me a table with 4 quarterly results
plotted and some company performance junk. We are
certainly not doing the same thing. What are you doing?

Yep. What result did you get?

Are you doing this on a form? Never build a chart on a report or you will
always see the "sample chart data" when in design view. Even on a report though
you should only get the sample data when in design view. In Preview you should
see your data.

Hi
I have taken the liberty of sending you a small mdb file.
I find it easier to change a working program than using
the chart wizard!

I'm doing it on a form. Is that where I should be?
And, I just looked at David Shofield's file. He's right
on the money. I still can't create it in my copy of A97
though. Frankly, I don't know how on earth he did it,
but he did! Its all there - right on the form - a perfect
plot of the 800 data points.

I got the same results as you (intermittently) when I used the wizard in a
report. In a form it "just works" for me.

Hi
I'm afraid I just looked up one of my old programs and altered it
to suit your data. I always do this now as I have lost the knack.

The problem with chart is that it is hard (impossible?) to find
where it stores its properties. You have to click and hope.
