Field Length for text box in form

Is there a way to set field length on an access form? I have a text
box that I want to make only one letter long(it stores a middle
initial).

Or is there a way to set up a validation rule that only allows one
character?

I am using a linked sql table and I can set the field length to 1 in
SQL however the error that appears is messy looking if you type in
something that is too long.

Certainly! The responsible property is called ValidationRule, appropriately.

You can also apply an input mask of "a" which allows just one character.
That way the limitation is visible. Users can handle limitations better
when they are informed beforehand.
