Searching for data in child forms, across multiple parent records

I have added search buttons to some access fomms. I have a seach
button in both the parent and the child form.

My issue is that when I search for a last name in the last_name field
of the child form I want to search for that last_name accross all
parent forms, flipping to any parent form that has a child record with
the right last_name.

Is there a reasonible way to do this?

Reasonable, yes but not built-in. That is you will need to design your own
search forms and buttons and write the code for it. Exactly how it would
work depends on whether the 'Find Next' button should find multiple
occurrences of the surname in the subform and highlight the record each time
or whether it just locates the matching company record.
