Prevent textfield from being deleted from but allow updates

Hi i need to prevent a textfield on a form from being deleted from but
allow updates/ append to any text already stored in the database.

How can i do this?

On beforeupdate event of the field you can test to see what the user is
try to do to it.
For instance:

if nz(thisfield,"")="" then cancel =true

Disable the control that displays the data (if it's not a datasheet,
althought there may be a way[not sure]). It will appear grey-ed out,
but the data will still be displayed.

This may be better than testing for an empty string on the beforeupdate
event because, what if the user deletes the text, and replaces it with
something other than an empty string?

Disabling the control is great if you don't want to allow updates. You
can add a another control to accept new text to be appended, but the
existing text cannot be updated.

How can you disable the control and add another control to accept new
text to be appended?

Pretty new to access.
