Problem running code from VBA editor

When working in Access 2000, if I'm in the code editor and want to run
or step through code to debug or test, instead of the code running
(whether from beginning of sub, or anywhere in the sub), I get a "Run
macro" window pop up. The window acts like it wants the name of a macro
entered, but provides none to choose from, and does not respond to
entering the name of the sub I'm trying to run.
End result is I cannot run code from the editor.
This function works fine when working on code in Word, although most of
the time, the Word code is already associated with macros I've created.
Access 2000, Windows 2000

Any thoughts?
