Left Function in Format Property

In an Access Project I have a datasheet with a column of genders, and
would like them to display only the first character. Is there a way I
can add the Left(string, #) function to a property to display only the
first character of the gender?
=Left([Gender],1)

In control source produces an error.

I decided to do this in the query instead and it works.

That should work. Is it possible that it is currently not working
because the text box you are entering the expression in is named
Gender. This would cause it to return an error. Try adding a new text
box control and enter that function into it.
