Changing one's AccessMonster password

I participate on these forums through www.AccessMonster.com, but I haven't
yet figured out how to update the password on my account. Am I missing
something obvious on the site map, or is it simply not possible?

There is nothing to keep anyone from participating in
comp.databases.ms-access directly, either using a news server that carries
it, or via the free http://groups.google.com archive. It puzzles me why
anyone would bother to participate via some proprietary service.

That said, the newsgroup is not an useful place to obtain information about
the third-party proprietary site. Try contacting them directly.

Especially since it seems to trim all of the post being responded to, making
it extremely difficult to follow the thread.

OK, I've used the "Contact us" link to send the webmaster an e-mail. I'd
hoped that there were enough people using these forums via AccessMonster to
stop me from looking stupid - no such luck :)

I first found these forums through AccessMonster when I was looking for
help on MS Access via Google - I have no idea about news servers and I'm
not sure what I would have to do to subscribe (is that the right term?) to
one through my company's firewall.

I've had a quick look at the Google group link you posted, and it looks
like it's got everything in the one forum - AccessMonster separates topics
into discussion groups like "Forms", "Forms Programming", etc, which I find
very helpful, since I can limit myself to just those topics that I know
something about. I'm not sure how the site achieves this - maybe it comes
back to that proprietary technology you're talking about. But then, all I
need is a web browser and an internet connection to take part, whereas from
this thread -> http://www.accessmonster.com/Uwe/For.../databases-ms-
access/22531/Newsgroup-Etiquette-Responses it seems like there are multiple
newsgroup readers out there :) You're right in that the whole post etc
thing may be unclear - the site has the previous replies already there, so
I don't have any problems following the thread... I wasn't aware it's
causing other people problems?

Look, I don't want to sound like I'm promoting the site, because it's not
like I'm a shareholder or anything, but it was what came up when I was
looking and I've been happy with it so far. I haven't had to pay anything
either, but who knows if my e-mail address has been passed on to the
spammers?

comp.databases.ms-access is a general, USENET newsgroup about Microsoft
Access database software. It is on about the fourth page if you start at
http://groups.google.com and proceed to computers and then databases. The
"new google groups" interface is, admittedly, not nearly as concise,
precise, and easy to use as the original one.

Microsoft sponsors a number of newsgroups, and provides an online web front
end for them... the access newsgroups all begin with
microsoft.public.access, they are categorized, and you can get access by
starting with http://msdn.microsoft.com and following links to newsgroups.
Interestingly, the sponsored newsgroups include specific groups for the
categories you mention: forms, formscoding, etc.. so your provider may only
be carrying those separate newsgroups.

If you have Internet access from home, most ISPs have a news server, and
there are a number of paid news servers to which you can subscribe. If your
employer does not permit direct connection, you may need to use a web
interface, such as Google or the Microsoft web interface.

However your third-party access site may categorize the posts from
comp.databases.ms-access, they are not categorized here.

And who knows how many good answers you have missed or might miss when
someone who is knowlegeable and experienced, but busy (there could be a
relationship there), skims through the newsgroup and comes upon, "via

There are always mnay questions from which to choose. Why answer to enhance
a commercial website, when one can answer in the open sharing of this
newsgroup?

Um, I don't feel I'm sharing any less openly via this website than I would
if I were participating via say, Microsoft's own web front end - I haven't
withheld any answers I might have provided otherwise, and while it does
filter out threads, it does so on the basis of rankings made by the posters
(ie. you can rank something as spam, the admins will review low ranked
threads and filter them out if they agree with you).

Like anything, I choose to use this website because I find the things it
provides worth the cost of doing so. Namely, I like the way it organises
the threads and the way I can jump to the sub categories easily, and I like
the way I can see the previous posts to understand the context of a
question. For the cost (which has been no outlay on my part - I guess they
make their money advertising or, as I said, perhaps on-selling my e-mail
address to the direct marketers), I've found no reason to change. As
another argument, it's in their commercial interests to make this as useful
an experience as possible, because it's their livelihood - could we say the
same of Microsoft? :)

To be honest, I've asked maybe three questions over 6 months, and gotten
great answers all 3 times. I like to think that's been driven not so much
by where I've been posting from, but by having a clear subject line,
content that allows replication / debugging, and humble tone. I'm not
trying to teach myself everything about Access through these web sites, but
looking to contribute where I can.

If anything, I'd appreciate if Douglas J Steele could expand on what he
means when he says:Especially since it seems to trim all of the post being responded to,
making it extremely difficult to follow the thread.

as I would like to understand how my method is making things harder for
other people to follow. Is there a web address or something you can direct
me to? Because frankly, I don't have that problem, so I'd like to know that
it is my problem rather than, say, your newsgroup reading program's problem
:)

comp.databases.ms-access is a USENET newsgroup, over which Microsoft has no
control and, as far as I know, is not accessible via Microsoft's web front
end. I believe that is limited to microsoft.public... newsgroups.

I participate here via the (free) Outlook Express news reader; the news
server is provided by my ISP. There are a number of third-party news
readers, free and fee, with differing capabilities. Many of my colleagues
whose opinions I value use those in preference to OE.

On occasion, for example, when I am working through a client's network, I
may use Google Groups to read online (and/or the Microsoft web interface for
microsoft.public... newsgroups).

I don't automatically pass by posts that came via Access Monster.

Apparently, they provide services that you find useful. I don't have any
problem with that. On the other hand, OE's handling of threads, and
capability for working offline as well as online, suit me just fine, too.
I'd rather have my newsgroups _unfiltered_, though. I don't need a website
to make decisions on what I do and don't see.

But, in any case, comp.databases.ms-access isn't a good source for
information about using Access Monster.
